Ryder Puts Real-Time Data On The Radar

To help sell its services and better manage shipping processes, Ryder System's logistics division in May completed a carrier portal that makes shipment-tracking information visible to customers as well as the 650 carriers (including FedEx, J.B. Hunt, Roadway, Schneider, UPS and Yellow) that move the company's freight. Through the portal, carriers provide shipment updates over XML, EDI or a built-in Web form. They also can use the portal to manage status updates for loads and shipments — about 1 million transactions a month — down to the smallest detail.

On the main portal screen, carriers view load information en route, as well as data on their daily load plan. Loads that fall behind schedule are highlighted, so Ryder operations and the carrier can spot them easily and make adjustments quickly to ensure deliveries are made on time.
