Via Launches Low-Power x86 Board For Industrial Devices

The component measures nearly 4 inches by 3 inches, and is designed for heat-sensitive devices with limited space.
VIA Technologies this week launched a low-power version of its x86 board for embedded automation and industrial control devices.

The Taiwanese chipmaker said its EPIA PX5000EG board includes the power-efficient 500-MHz Eden ULV processor, which has a maximum power draw of 1 watt.

The board builds upon last year's EPIA PX10000 Pico-ITX board, which is "the world's smallest mass production x86 board," according to VIA. The component measures nearly 4 inches by 3 inches and is designed for heat-sensitive devices with limited space.

"The introduction of the VIA EPIA PX5000EG elevates the VIA EPIA range of innovative embedded solutions to new heights of thermal and energy efficiency in an extremely miniaturized form factor," Daniel Wu, VP of VIA's embedded platform division, said in a statement released Wednesday.

VIA said EPIA PX5000EG is a complete system that includes both LVDS/DVI and VGA support, integrated 5.1 channel audio, 100/10 Ethernet, both IDE and SATA drive support, and up to six USB ports and a COM port.

To prove the reliability of the board, VIA has launched a contest in which embedded systems developers can try to guess how long it can last while running a system under full load without any cooling. The winner gets a VIA ARTiGO Pico-ITX Builder Kit. Details are available on the company's Web site.

VIA last month announced that it would expand its embedded board portfolio to include modules compliant with the COM Express industry standard. The fanless modules are aimed at industrial PC and large manufacturing customers focused on products in gaming, health care, and industrial automation.

COM Express is a standard board form factor for embedded computers. The specification was developed by the PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group.
