Re: Computing Power to Find Cures
Actually IBM has been using Watson to fight cancer for a long time, working with a number of highly regarded medical institutions. I only mentioned a couple in the article but IBM's PR/marketing department has a ton of information on its website about the organizations it's worked with. The company seems to be steadily working across the country (world?!), teaming up with medical/research groups to collect their knowledge/share Watson. As a result, Watson gets smarter because it's learning from these collective cancer specialists and the specialists are learning from the people who came before them and all the data -- the research, journals, etc. -- that Watson absorbs daily.
IBM does plan, at some point, to move beyond cancer, I believe. But they haven't figured out cancer yet and that, I think, is the first goal.
