re: Do Patient Portals Ramp Up Cost Of Healthcare?
More research is needed to really discover the true cost of patient portals to healthcare. I think we'll find that it increases the cost marginally, or more likely decreases the costs long term. It may lower the barrier to contact with the physician or prompt more office visits (as seen with this study), which would raise costs slightly, but it will increase patient involvement and remove some visit types (prescription refills) that may not be needed. Patients may also be more willing/more comfortable to enter something through an online portal rather than tell someone in-person which would lead to better diagnoses.
