HP Unveils Server For Small And Midsize Businesses

Hewlett-Packard yesterday introduced a server for small and medium businesses, the HP NetServer E 60.

HP has packed the dual-CPU E 60 with a lot of power in the belief that that small and midsize business customers have the same requirements for reliability, scalability, and uptime as their larger brethren. Customers get a choice of three Intel processors, multiple volumes of memory, and multiple volumes of storage capacity. The processors are Pentium II 400-MHz, 450-MHz, and 500-MHz chips; memory is available in chunks of 64, 128, or 256 Mbytes all the way up to capacity of 1 Gbyte; the storage is available on drives of 4, 9, or 18 Gbytes, with a maximum capacity of 72 Gbytes.

Besides letting customers start small and grow without having to buy additional servers, the E 60 comes with an integrated HP SureStore T20XI tape drive and backup software from Stac Software Inc. The software includes disaster-recovery capabilities for the full restoration of data files, operating systems, applications, configurations, and settings. "Instead of manual restores of the operating system," says Dat Golgra, HP's small to medium business product marketing manager, "the E 60 enables the customer to fully restore the system."

One HP server customer says there are additional benefits with the onboard tape drive and software. "The 20-Gbyte tape drive on board is absolutely awesome because we spend lots of time getting the tape drive to play nicely with the server," says David Cieslak, a principal with accounting software-installation consulting firm Information Technology Group in Encino, Calif. "It removes a real problem we've had." He said he hopes to have an E 60 up and running within 45 days.

The E 60 will be available next month, with pricing starting at $1,550 for 64 Mbytes of memory and a 9-Gbyte drive. Dan Dolan, an analyst with Dataquest, says HP's NetServer division does a good job understanding the needs of small and midsize business customers. "The E 60 is really good for the industry it's attacking," Dolan says. "With the automated tape backup solution and ease of installation, small business customers will find the capabilities tailored to fit their needs."
