IBM And Rational Forge Development Alliance

IBM and Rational Software Corp. today announced a development alliance that will provide links between Rational's modeling tools and software in IBM's Application Framework for E-business. The goal, according to executives from both companies, is to allow customers to accelerate the design, development, testing, and deployment of electronic commerce software. The first technology from the alliance will be an add-in module for IBM's Visual Age for Java development tool, which provides a metadata exchange bridge to the Rational Rose modeling tool. That will allow developers to build models with the Rational software and generate Java code based on that model using use Visual Age for Java. The component, based on the extensible markup language standard, won't go into beta until fall. But what IBM is calling a "technology preview" will be available from beginning Wednesday, June 30, free to registered users of the Visual Age Developers Domain online source.

Other projects on the drawing board call for integrating Rational's testing tools with IBM's development environment and run-time software. A number of Rational's products will also be ported to IBM platforms, such as IBM's WebSphere application server.
