IBM Debuts Software For Converting Data To Wireless Platforms
IBM today introduced Websphere Transcoding Publisher, software that can save companies the trouble of reprogramming their Internet content for display on handheld and wireless devices. The Java-based software automatically converts data written in HTML or the Extensible Markup Language into languages used by these devices, such as the Wireless Markup Language, during transmission.
"There's a huge amount of content on the Web that's designed for the desktop," says Jim Fletcher, program director for Websphere Transcoding Publisher. Research firm Gartner Group says that in four years, 70% of new cellular phones and 80% of personal digital assistants will have access to the Internet. Growth in the wireless market is driving IBM to develop ways to modify Web content for wireless devices, Fletcher says.
Sabre Inc., which manages IT systems for airlines and owns Internet travel service Travelocity.com, is testing IBM's product to allow travelers to receive online flight information from airlines and make flight changes from a wireless phone. Nancy Raynor, senior VP of emerging business for Sabre, says the product "allows easy access to PDAs and cellular phones," which will make Sabre's offerings available across a wider range of devices.
The product, which ships March 31, is based on open standards and is available on AIX, Linux, Solaris, and Windows NT and 2000 platforms.
