IBM Enhances Messaging Software

IBM is beefing up its MQSeries line of messaging software by adding publish/subscribe capabilities, dynamic workload distribution for improved scalability and failover, and platform-specific enhancements to the OS/390 and Windows NT versions of the middleware.

In a series of introductions today, IBM also debuted a version of the MQSeries Workflow software for OS/390 mainframes and announced MQSeries Integrator, message broker software that routes, translates, and exchanges messages between applications.

The need for application integration technology is being fueled by supply-chain automation, business mergers and acquisitions, and the need to link new packaged applications with legacy systems. "Our research shows that enterprise application integration middleware can provide organizations not only with tactical solutions, but new ways to build strategic infrastructures to compete," says Dave Kelly, an analyst with the Hurwitz Group.

The dynamic workload distribution feature in MQSeries 5.1 balances processing tasks between multiple systems, improves scalability, and provides automatic recovery during system failures. The publish/subscribe technology routes information to users who have previously requested or "subscribed" to specific data. MQSeries 2.1 for OS/390 takes greater advantage of IBM's Parallel Sysplex technology for improved scalability. MQSeries for Windows NT 5.1 offers improved user and programming interfaces.

All of the announced products will be available by midyear. Pricing for MQSeries 5.1 varies by platform and starts at $3,000 while pricing for MQSeries Integrator begins at $100,000. MQSeries Workflow for OS/390 3.1 will be priced according to processor capacity and the number of users.
