IBM Expands Networking Hardware Line

IBM this week will round out its networking hardware line with new LAN, WAN, and remote-access products. IBM's new high-end LAN routing switch, the 8371 Multilayer Ethernet Switch, is designed to integrate Ethernet connections with IBM ATM switching. Another new backbone switch is the 8274 Nways LAN Routeswitch Model GRS, which supports all forms of Ethernet, as well as Token Ring and ATM connections.

The vendor will also start selling two new 2212 Access Utility models, which provide virtual private networks and integrate voice, fax, and data functions for small to midsize businesses. And IBM will ship a new release of the 2220 Nways BroadBand Switch that enhances its ATM and frame- relay capabilities.

An important addition is the 8371, the first of a planned line of switches that will let customers running IBM's ATM switches on a LAN backbone provide Ethernet connections as well. It will provide a migration option for companies using IBM Token Ring equipment. The device supports Multiprotocol Over ATM, a form of distributed routing, and will be available either as a standalone product or as a module for IBM's 8265 Nways ATM switch.
