IBM next month will begin shipping the OS/390 mainframeoperating system with Novell Directory Services on board.Novell Network Services for OS/390 incorporates Novell NDSVersion 4 and comes free of charge when customers installOS/390 Security Server. NDS helps administrators trackavailable hardware and software resources on a LAN.
The services for OS/390 are for IS executives overseeing amix of mainframes and NetWare servers. The attraction forthem includes reducing the number of management platformsthey have to support, consolidating the management ofperhaps dozens of NetWare servers onto a single mainframe, and reducing the complexity and costs associated withnetwork management.
An industry analyst says NDS improves network management, but not enough to compare with the manageability of themainframe. "There continue to be questions about how Iconsistently manage the network," says Carl Greiner, a VPand analyst for the Meta Group Inc. "If I can bring themanagement into the mainframe environment, I can hidecomplexity and minimize the risks." Even with NDS, Greinerexpects most IS administrators in charge of data centers toagree with him. "They'll take the very reliable, manageablemainframe instead of 20 different NetWare servers any day."
