IBM To Upgrade RS/6000, AIX

IBM has spelled out its plans for the next RS/6000 server,the next version of AIX, and a new rack architecturedesigned for Internet service providers. The RS/6000 S80server, which is scheduled to ship by year's end, willimprove on the current S70A line at the high end. The S80will double to triple current S70A performance, double thenumber of Power PC processors from 12 to 24, and willbenefit from advanced copper chip-interconnect technology.Specific performance numbers and pricing haven't beendetermined yet.

At the same time the S80 ships, IBM will unveil AIX 4.3.3,which will have new code making it easier for the vendor totoggle between PowerPC and Intel's IA-64 processors nextyear under Project Monterey. AIX 4.3.3 will have a greaternumber of simultaneous users supported and transactions perminute than the current version, 4.3.2. The new operatingsystem will also offer enhanced encryption for Internetsecurity, better Windows NT integration, and simplifiedsystem management that will be more PC-like.

For the first time, the RS/6000 division will work withindustry-standard racks. Under the project, code-namedPizzazz, IBM will court ISPs with products based on EIAstandard 19-inch racks, which will support up to 24 separatelow-end servers and at least 24 Gbytes of memory in a six-foot-high frame.
