In Short: Red Hat Seesaws Back To Profitability

Linux provider Red Hat Inc. earned $1.5 million on revenue of $27.2 million for its first quarter ended May 31. A year ago, it lost $4.6 million on $19.5 million in revenue. The quarter included big deals such as Red Hat, Dell Computer, and Oracle moving the 13-million customer database of U.K. telecom company Orange SA from an Oracle8i database on a Sun Solaris platform to Dell servers running Oracle9i with Real Application Clusters and Red Hat Linux.

But Red Hat also faces litigation fears: The SCO Group is suing IBM for allegedly feeding Unix source code to the Linux community. But general counsel Mark Webbink says Red Hat is facing no lawsuit and hasn't misappropriated any code.
