Independent Consultants Get Their Own Exchange

ICplanet Inc. has launched a recruiting site for independent consultants. It's an Internet exchange that seeks to connect independent contractors with recruiters and hiring managers. The company says it has 23,000 registered users.

Its threefold focus is on finding, screening, and qualifying professional consultants. Hiring managers can use a series of drop-down menus to build individual profiles for job candidates, including title, skills, years of experience, and length of the project. Users can weigh such criteria to rank candidates. ICplanet verifies work history and technology certification, and it can set up some online screening questions to weed out the unqualified.

Consultants can search for projects based on location, start date, skills, pay, and experience, and they can set up E-mail notification whenever a relevant position is posted.

One of the most interesting tools lets users create a window within another Web site by embedding a URL from ICplanet in their own site as an image link. For example, CEO Jeffrey Walker says, the Society for Information Management can select, click, and paste senior IT jobs--or any other configuration--in a window on its own site. Because it's a window into the other site, the information is updated parallel to the information on The process is awaiting approval from the U.S. Patent Office.
