At Emergency Medical Associates (EMA), Jonathan Rothman developed a data management/BI infrastructure to empower physicians at 17 emergency departments in New York and New Jersey hospitals. The infrastructure integrates disparate data sources to provide better clinical and administrative information, and it's credited with containing rising costs and improving physician productivity. As an example, bonuses are paid to physicians based on Balanced Scorecard metrics tied to the completeness and accuracy of the records they keep. As a result, clinical, financial and insurance reimbursement processes have improved along with quality of billing and diagnosis information. In the last 12 months, revenue has increased by 16% across the 17 emergency departments managed by EMA.
Intelligent Enterprise Award finalist Jamie Sguerra is second vice president & chief architect of the IT Division at Guardian Life Insurance Company of America. In 2001, Guardian embraced and Sguerra directed the implementation of a services-oriented architecture that has reduced application development costs by 30%, saving the 5,000-employee company approximately $16 million per year. New applications serving the sales force are also developed more quickly, in many cases before competitors have reacted to market changes.
