"There is an undeniable correlation between BPM project success and the use of a dedicated process team or Establishment of a Center of Excellence," wrote report author Nathaniel Palmer of Transformation + Innovation, the research and consulting firm that conducted the survey. "BPM programs are not likely to succeed beyond the departmental level (if at all) without having in place an organized business process team of some kind."What's true for business process management also applies to other disciplines. Last week, Doug Henschen wrote about growing interest in "BI competency centers," which are typically cross-functional teams (architects, developers, support, analysts, line-of-business managers, etc.) that develop frameworks of metrics, goals and best practices that can then be shared with business units and departments throughout an organization.
Among the BP Trends survey's other findings of note, the 74 companies surveyed reported five top process-improvement priorities:
• 49% Customer Service • 45% Back Office Operations • 38% Order Entry and Billing • 27% Compliance Management (SOX, etc.) • 26% Manufacturing and Fulfillment
