Re: Legacy or Ancient
I agree with Wyatt that in few organizations does the IT department actually have the budget to empower each and every employee on all levels. They usually have to pick and choose where they will invest. On the flip side, employees are often not particularly reasonable and flexible, and often demand specific equipment simply personal preference. It's a tough balance to try to please everyone.

Surrounded by Legacy systems
First there's the Dell Tower, vintage 1999 within reach of my home "corner" office. I use that to stack old reporters notebooks from that pre y2k-era. (You never know when you'll need to look up an old contact.)

There there is my 2009 Windows XP Acer netbook that I have hooked into an old CD player and speakers in my bedroom. I use that to listen to music in my Itunes library while reading from my Kindle in bed, or stream songs from Pandora or Spotify.

My junk drawer rivals any that I have seen in any IT department help desk: cables, connectectors, international phone jacks, headphones and power cords from generations of dead laptops.

I guess it's time for an upgrade. Probably long overdue for a housecleaning.

Re: Legacy or Ancient
IT isn't doing its job to empower if employees prefer to work at home due to superior gear and connectivity.

Legacy or Ancient
Clearly the impact of Consumerization of IT and BYOD was spawned by the fact that most IT departments were getting hammered to stretch out replenshment cycles to conserve dollars -- and the workforce started realizing what was available at home, or on the run mobily, was far superior

Re: Just upgraded myself, to a worse display
Whoopty, don't even get me started on display screens! That's one case where "better" is truly subjective. I plug my very expensive laptop into an old monitor because I just can't deal with Apple's Retina displays. What a waste...

Just upgraded myself, to a worse display
Ironically the display I just upgraded too is far worse than my main one. Grabbed an Oculus Rift and it's barely 720p, but it's still blowing my mind.
