Intel Changes Chip Numbers

Intel rolled out new Pentium chips for notebooks last week, along with a new chip-numbering scheme that puts more emphasis on overall performance than clock speed. The shift is meant to convey that Intel's newest products can deliver benefits such as additional memory or security features that aren't reflected in clock speed, Intel VP Anand Chandrasekher says. The new chips will clock in from 1.7 GHz to 2 GHz, about the same as last year's mobile line. But they feature a larger cache and other performance-enhancing technologies.
