Intel today said it's creating a new brand of products--dubbed NetStructure--that will target dot-coms and other companies that require fast E-commerce capabilities. An amalgam of products and services from a number of Intel divisions, the NetStructure line includes technologies that the company gained through its acquisitions last year of IPivot, a supplier of equipment for improving Web-site performance, and XLNT, a networking vendor.
Out of the gate, Intel says it will offer a total of seven NetStructure products and services including the Cache 1500, an Internet caching appliance that incorporates the Inktomi Traffic Server Engine; the 7140 Traffic Director, a traffic-cop device that balances loads among E-commerce servers; and the 7180 e-Commerce Director, which Intel says will speed SSL transactions by up to 150%.
John Miner, VP and GM of Intel's Communications Products division, says customers of sites using the latter device will experience a vastly improved online shopping experience. "The second you go from browsing to shopping you're into SSL, so that is what we need to speed up," Miner says.
Intel is backing the effort with a multimillion-dollar ad campaign called "eight seconds," the maximum amount of time that shoppers will wait to complete an online transaction, according to a study by Zona Research.
