Intel said today it has begun shipping a virtual private network application aimed at companies with fewer than 500 employees.
The Shiva LanRover VPN Express lets emerging enterprises manage secure remote access, LAN-to-LAN connections, and extranets for up to 50 users, for a list price of $3,495. VPNs allow companies to attain the level of security they'd achieve with more expensive dedicated lines, while connected through the Internet.
The LanRover VPN is Intel's first foray into VPNs for small and midsize companies, says Bob Lonadier, product marketing engineer. The rise of remote workers and information storage on extranets is driving demand among these customers, he says. Intel's next-largest offering is priced at $6,200 and targets enterprise customers. Intel acquired remote access and VPN vendor Shiva in February.
