6 Must-See Sessions At Interop Las Vegas

There's so much happening at Interop Las Vegas it's hard to choose. Here's six recommendations to get you started.

With nearly 100 sessions to choose from at Interop Las Vegas, it can be hard to decide where to spend your valuable time. These six recommendations, which cover networking, security, leadership, cloud, and storage are a great place to start.

Join Ethan Banks, a network architect and PacketPushers host, for his session Lessons Learned Operating Active/Active Data Centers. Ethan will share the realities and complexities of an active/active DC design based on his own experiences. The session explores challenges related to bandwidth and latency, data synchronization, global server load balancing, and more.

On the security front, Michele Chubirka leads the session Ending The Tyranny Of Expensive Security Tools: A New Hope. A senior security architect, Michele will explore how to build a robust security environment using capabilities built into routers, switches, and other network gear. She’ll also discuss open source products that work just as well as commercial ones.

Besides getting great advice from a security practitioner, you can also play ‘Spot the Star Wars’ references in Michele’s presentation.

IT is under intense pressure to be more responsive to business needs. Courtney Kissler, VP of E-Commerce and Store Technologies at Nordstrom, shares how a mobile app development project led to a wholesale transformation to create a culture of continuous improvement and an integrated IT team that quickly responds to customer needs. She’ll also drill into the challenges and opportunities facing IT pros in a rapidly changing tech and business environment.

Howard Marks, who consistently ranks as a top-rated speaker at Interop, will explore using the public cloud for disaster recovery. Cloud-based DR can save time and money vs. traditional options, and Howard will look at available options, how to match your business needs with cloud offerings, and compare packaged services to rolling your own.

If you’re ready to get your hands dirty with software-defined networking, Matt Oswalt’s SDN Building Blocks is for you. It’s a no-spin, technical deep dive into core technologies that underpin SDN, including OpenFlow, OVSDB, and VXLAN. You’ll come away with essential knowledge to help you with your own SDN implementation, whether you go with a proprietary platform or open-source option.

Finally, it’s clear that IT lacks diversity when it comes to gender, race, and diversity. Ageism is also a problem. At the same time, we’re constantly told of a shortage of IT talent. The session Diversity In IT And The Myth Of The Talent Gap will tackle these issues head on. Our expert panel will share tools for IT hiring managers to ensure they don’t overlook candidates who don’t look like them, and provide tips for IT job seekers who struggle against bias.

Interop Las Vegas runs April 27 through May 1. Register now to learn the latest technology developments, accelerate your career, and network with your peers in the IT community.
