Employee Mobility A Top Priority For UK CIOs

Senior IT teams view flexible working as an opportunity for their organizations, according to an Interop London survey.

Employee mobility is the biggest priority for IT departments across the United Kingdom, according to a survey of senior IT decision-makers conducted by Interop London, the flagship event of London Technology Week.

88% of respondents confirmed they are exploring collaboration solutions to facilitate mobility. Rather than viewing it as a headache, the same number said they treat flexible working as an opportunity.

The survey also found around two thirds (63%) of senior IT representatives are actively seeking new technology solutions to help them solve their business or industry-specific problems.

A quarter were also prioritizing moving from on-premises to cloud-based solutions, relocating data to a cloud-hosted servers, and improving security.

Hiten Vadukul, Enterprise Architect at Virgin Active and a member of the Interop London advisory board, is among those treating mobility as a priority.

He said the global fitness chain's IT department is exploring a 'choose your own device' approach, using the job/function an employee does to determine the type of devices they are offered.

"Ultimately, the purpose of mobility should be to support collaboration and seamless working," he explained.

"From a strategic perspective, keeping the list of devices small allows them be managed effectively, reduces the support impact on IT (compared to BYOD) and ensures the business applications deployed work as expected."

Respondents were also asked about the security threats facing their organizations. 62% believe unintended user errors such as accidental malware uploads and data loss posed the biggest security challenge.

This compared to just 13% who were concerned about external attacks from hackers, cloud storage and third-party data hosting, or unsupported personal devices.

"These latest findings reflect many of the global IT and workplace trends being facilitated by cutting-edge vendor solutions in areas such as mobility, IT infrastructure, cloud computing, cyber security, data-defined business intelligence, and software applications," said Josue Paulos, Event Manager, Interop London.

"As the choice and sophistication of these solutions continues to grow, the challenge for IT lies in finding the best and most sustainable options for their organization and its employees."
