re: National Health Information Exchange: Why The Delay?
Using the Hurricane Sandy example, think about how useful HIE would have been for those doing emergency triage for wounded survivors. With a central data store for patient information, or at least a way to easily retrieve patient data, responders would have immediate knowledge of medications and allergies, along with any pertinent health conditions for people hurt by the storm. One issue I see with a national HIE is having patients buy into a central repository that would be safe enough to trust. Although there may be enormous benefit, the idea of having all your information in a central location is a hard pill to swallow.
