Here are several startups getting noticed in the hot market for application performance related to virtualized servers.
Vizioncore, a unit of Quest Software, offers vFogLight, which provides performance monitoring, capacity planning, and chargeback for VMware ESX Server virtual machines. It can drill into VM processes to determine which are hurting performance, determine which virtual machines are using resources inefficiently, and sound alarms for a deviation from normal activity. Its data collection engine can read management information in VMware's vCenter Server.
VM Monitor from eG Innovations, without embedding reporting agents in the application, can provide performance information on a live, virtualized application and monitor more than 80 apps from the likes of SAP, Oracle, Microsoft, Citrix, and IBM. It also shows the server resources the application is consuming. VM Monitor monitors the VMware ESX hypervisor through both agent and agentless methods, correlating hypervisor and VM information. It has added a cross-hypervisor monitor to keep tabs on Citrix XenServer and Sun Microsystems' Logical Domains, also known as Containers.
Netuitive SI for VMware is a way to integrate VMware virtual machine statistics with information on physical machines' operations, tracking normal behavior of a host server, its virtual machines, and each VM's applications. It can show VM performance in the context of the host and the whole resource pool of servers, and it identifies any "badly behaving" VM.
Veeam supplies Veeam Monitor, which can show resource consumption by all components of the virtual infrastructure, from the host's hypervisor to individual apps on VMs. Veeam Monitor can see the I/O loads of storage assigned to VMs, a key checkpoint for application bottlenecks. It also can track background virtual infrastructure events, such as a live migration of a virtual machine, and relate those events to performance of an individual VM and its application.
Embotics offers V-Commander, an agentless monitoring system that aggregates data from as many as eight VMware vCenter Servers. It can group VMs according to the nature of the applications they're running, then implement policies that govern that "zone" to ensure that they have the correct resources and security. It's a step removed from direct application management, but it can help ensure performance of select virtualized apps, like transaction processing.
Uptime Application Monitoring establishes historic metrics for an application, then monitors operations against those metrics and analyzes them for trouble spots. It can show a set of services that make up a composite application or business process and monitor their operations.
