Application service providers are thriving in niches such as that provided by Bloodhound Inc. The medical-services startup, which lined up $3 million in private equity funding last week from existing investors, offers a hosted application that insurance companies and health-maintenance organizations use to do data modeling to avoid overpayment because of duplicate claims or other problems arising from processing huge amounts of data.

Clients use the tool to check approved bills before they're paid. The company says it can achieve 3% to 5% cost savings by spotting bills that shouldn't be paid or should be reduced.
