It's easy to understand the need to for configurable cloud-computing resources. But does anyone really need to buy (rent?) cloud-computing capabilities on an hourly basis? SoftLayer thinks so.To be honest, I don't know a thing about SoftLayer, but it appears to provide "global, on-demand data center and hosting services from facilities across the U.S."

Cool. But not exactly unique.

Perhaps that's the reasoning behind the company's provocative offer to make CloudLayer Computing available by the hour, like time at the local Internet cafe or various power tools.

But it turns out that cloud computing is cheaper than most of those options, starting at just 15 cents per hour for 1 Core + 1GB RAM + 100GB SAN Storage. And the company claims you can get a computing instance up and running in as little as 5 minutes.

Maybe so, but I'd submit that if you're cutting things that close, you may not be managing your business as well as you might.
