Phil - with regards to your comment "Why buy hardware and databases from Oracle or IBM when they can house your data better and cheaper than you can?", I would have to mention regulatory compliance issues here. How do you know who has your data (or access to that data) once it's been pushed to the cloud? It's a matter of integrity and confidentiality.
What about the security aspect? As a corollary to your idea of the future here, I can see these computing cartels hiring the "Soldier of Fortune"-types to do security to make sure that paying customers will have access to their clouds, etc.
And finally, what I'm seeing at the end of your article is that businesses of all sizes are going to have to develop their own software, which contains their business' DNA (intellectual property) - I can see some portions of the market doing this, but businesses on a smaller scale may shy away from it due to the investments required.
