Unless you're a history buff, it's likely that among the few tidbits you remember about George Washington, besides being the first U.S. president, is that he supposedly wore wooden teeth. If you want to know more, you can access and search more than 17,400 of his personal letters and papers.
A 37-volume collection of documents from John C. Fitzpatrick's "The Writings Of George Washington From The Original Manuscript Sources, 1745--1799" were recently posted on the University of Virginia's Electronic Text Center. The papers give insight into political squabbles as well as important government issues of the time. But can they tell us if those dentures were really made out of wood?
