IBM Takes $200M From HP And Oracle Customers

Continuing to push its four-year-old "Migration Factory" campaign, IBM said it gained nearly 4 points of Unix market share in Q2 by convincing 239 enterprise customers to replace Unix solutions from Hewlett-Packard or Oracle with those from IBM. At an average of less than $1 million per migration, those quarterly wins might not be megadeals-but IBM says its Migration Factory now has 2,600 such conversions.



Continuing to push its four-year-old "Migration Factory" campaign, IBM said it gained nearly 4 points of Unix market share in Q2 by convincing 239 enterprise customers to replace Unix solutions from Hewlett-Packard or Oracle with those from IBM. At an average of less than $1 million per migration, those quarterly wins might not be megadeals-but IBM says its Migration Factory now has 2,600 such conversions.While both HP and Oracle/Sun were hit hard, accounting for 239 of the 285 total Unix wins claimed by IBM, Oracle-Sun was the primary victim as it got the short end of 171 "competitive displacements" during Sun's first complete quarter as part of Oracle. HP suffered 68 such displacements, IBM said, and 46 other Unix conversions involved unidentified competitors.

IBM said those 285 2Q wins represented $262 million in total revenue, and allowed IBM to extend its leadership in the Unix market, according to statistics from both IDC and Gartner. IDC reported that over the past five years, IBM has gained 14 points of share in the Unix market, while HP has lost 4 points and Oracle-Sun has also lost 4 points, IBM said.
