Lindows.com on Tuesday shipped the newest version of its Linux operating system, LindowsOS 4.5, which lets users place free computer-based telephone calls.

LindowsOS 4.5 includes integrated Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) technology that provides free global calling over broadband Internet connections, said Lindows.com. Among the calling features tucked into the new OS are four-way conferencing and unique phone numbers for each LindowsOS-equipped computer. Calls can be placed to any SIP-enabled computer or phone.

Other enhancements to the Linux operating system include expanded hardware support -- automatic detection and installation of more peripherals -- remote desktop sharing, the inclusion of the OpenOffice 1.0 open-source productivity suite, and power management features that automatically power down laptops.

LindowsOS 4.5 is available now for $59.95.
