Novell on Tuesday unveiled Nterprise Linux Services 1.0, a suite of enterprise services that extends traditional NetWare services to the Linux operating system.

First announced in April, Nterprise Linux Services 1.0 boasts file, print, messaging, directory, and management services which run on SuSE Linux Enterprise Server and Red Hat Enterprise Linux distributions, allowing companies to replace Windows servers with more affordable open-source software, said Novell.

Among the services bundled within Nterprise are eDirectory, a high-end directory and authentication service; iFolder, a file management service that allows users to securely share documents with others; NetMail, an instant messaging and scheduling service; and iManager, an overall infrastructure management service that lets administrators track systems via a Web-based interface.

The suite also includes additional network management tools that Novell gained when it acquired Ximian -- and that company's Red Carpet management platform -- in August.

Nterprise Linux Services 1.0 will ship Thursday, Dec. 18, through Novell's authorized resellers at a suggested list price of $59 per user.

Novell has been moving aggressively into the Linux market by not only shifting its NetWare platform to the open-source OS, but also through recent acquisitions of Ximian and SuSE, one of the largest Linux sellers.
