Sun Microsystem announced that it had purchased the assets of Montalvo Systems, a semiconductor startup that was trying to break into the x86 chip market.?The assets will be integrated into the microelectronics business unit,? according to Dana Lengkeek, a Sun spokesperson. That business unit is currently responsible for Sun's own line of UltraSPARC processors, so it is not clear what interest the company has in an x86-oriented manufacturer. ?We believe acquiring these assets will enhance the current and future products we are developing and expect them to contribute to future generations of Sun's microprocessor technology, which will in turn drive additional differentiation for Sun's Systems products,? Lengkeek continued.eWeek
