I think car manufacturers are trying to bridge the gap between smarphone and there in dash apps.... but this seems to be a hit and miss.
Smartphones just require over the air updates, which just having access to WiFi is sufficient. With Cars, it's a different story, since you would either need to be in a WiFi zone and have the car link up, or the car would need to have it's own celular service (which entails charges of some sort), and I think this is where they might run into issues with consumers... unless it tethers to an existing smartphone with data plan.
This is why I think the best approach is simply have the car be an extension of an existing smarphone/tablet (whether it be Android of iOS).
