Hewlett-Packard remained the No. 1 maker of laptops in terms of shipments for the sixth consecutive quarter, as the overall market increased 41% over the same period a year ago to 33 million units, DisplaySearch said.
Acer, which had been a distant third to Dell, dramatically narrowed the gap even without the acquisitions, the researcher said. With the acquisitions included, Acer overtook Dell by more than 600,000 units. In the U.S., however, Dell maintained its No. 1 spot, holding off HP by just more than 3%.
Specifically, HP accounted for 20.1% of the global market, Acer 15.9%, Dell 14%, and Toshiba 8.6%. Rounding out the top notebook makers were Lenovo, 8.2%; Fujitsu-Siemens, 4.9%; Sony, 4.8%; Asus, 4.7% and Apple, 4.1%.
The most popular panel size in the quarter was 15.4 inches with a resolution of 1280 by 800 pixels, which accounted for slightly more than 50% of all notebook PCs shipped. A distant second was 14.1-inch screens, which had a 23% share.
Notebook shipments are expected to surpass desktop sales for the first time in 2009. This year, shipments are expected to reach 136 million units, up 25.8% from 2007, according to analyst Alex Yang of Lehman Brothers. By contrast, desktop shipments will decline about 1.3% from 2007 to reach 143 million units.
In general, desktop shipments have grown in the single digits, while notebooks have had several years of growth above 20%.
