Comic: New Year's Resolutions

Making a resolution in the New Year to improve your career makes sense. This one, not so much.

A resolution not worth keeping.

Brian Moore is a cartoonist and illustrator. His first brush with the world of IT was a very part-time gig applying software patches on a TRS-80 Model III. The patches were about four lines long and arrived in the mail, typed on letterhead. He has since moved on to computers ... View Full Bio

Re: While we're at it...
I find I tend to make personal improvements when they're less dramatically determined; rather, the big steps tend to happen quietly through making tiny progressions routine.

For instance, in the past couple of months I've almost completely cut out sugary soda from my diet.  Now I have some once in a blue moon, but I've replaced those cravings with flavored seltzer water and Diet Coke (granted, the latter isn't exactly a health elixir, but it's a lot better than the tons of sugar in a regular soda).  Through these small steps, I not only feel better about what I'm doing for my long-term health, but I've managed to lose close to 9 pounds without even trying.

Re: While we're at it...

I call New Year's resolutions our own personal campaign promise. As we know with most politicians those campaign promises rarely come to fruition. If we want to avoid the letdown we need to set achievable goals short term dates not the entire year and check point our progress so we can get back on track. Think of it as your own quarterly earning call!
