In addition, the site, which caters to college students, also added what it calls "mini-feeds" to subscribers' profiles.
The news feeds deliver headlines generated by activities such as changes in a person's favorites list, Ruchi Sanghvi, product manager for Facebook, said in the company blog. The mini-feed is similar, except that it centers around one person and focuses on profile changes, such as the addition of photos.
Both features follow privacy settings already in place, so people who could see a subscriber's information before are the only ones who can receive the news feeds.
Facebook in May was the third largest social network on the Web, followed by No. 1 MySpace and Classmates.com, according to ComScore Networks.
