First Virus Hits Microsoft.Net

news brief, 1/14/2002
Antivirus software vendors last week said a "concept" virus, known as W32.Donut, is the first to be directed at the Microsoft.Net architecture. The virus infects Microsoft.Net Intermediate Language files on machines running the Windows 2000 or Windows XP operating systems. The virus isn't likely to become widespread, antivirus vendors say. It's also low-risk, prompting only a dialog box reading, "This cell has been infected by dotNET virus!" in 10% of affected systems.
