Dresner joins Hyperion from IT research firm Gartner, where he was one of 13 Gartner Research Fellows and also held the title of vice president. Dresner is already familiar with Hyperion, having led the formation of Gartner's business intelligence research practice.
"I'm well acquainted with the strengths and weakness of every company in the field, Dresner said in a statement.
Dresner will help guide Hyperion's business "development and evolution," the company said, and he will serve as a spokesperson on BI and performance management topics. He'll also work directly with customers, helping them implement best practices, Hyperion said.
While at Gartner, Dresner also researched business activity monitoring (BAM). He conceived the firm's Business Intelligence Conference, which is held annually in Chicago. Prior to joining Gartner, Dresner held various roles at Digital Equipment Corp.
Dresner will report to president and CEO Godfrey Sullivan.
