Unveiled at the Storage Networking World in San Diego, the Intel Storage Server SSR212MC2 targets small and medium-sized businesses. The hardware is powered by Intel's Xeon processor 5300 series.
The server comes with the option of including one or two Dual-Core Intel Xeon 5100 series processors, as well as a choice of Serial-Attached SCSI (SAS) or high-capacity Serial ATA hard drives. The new product uses chassis from third-party vendor Xyratex.
Software companies supporting the SSR212MC2 include Microsoft, FalconStor, Open-E, Novel's Open SuSE, Red Hat and Wasabi Systems. Intel has also worked with hardware vendors Emulex and Mellanox to enable the use of network connectivity options, such as Fibre Channel and InfiniBand.
The new product alone cost $2,800, and $3,600 with the Intel SRCSAS144e RAID controller. The storage server is set for release in May.
