Laplink Everywhere 4, priced starting at $8.95 per month, lets users access remote machines from desktops, laptops, and some handhelds and smart phones via Web browsers ranging from Internet Explorer to Firefox.
New to version 4 is support for Microsoft's Remote Desktop Protocol, which lets users control Windows XP Professional and Windows Server 2000/2003 machines through firewalls without prior configuration.
Everywhere 4 also uses Google Desktop Search to power remote searches of systems from any Web-able device, including smart phones and PDAs. Files found with such searches can be immediately opened, while messages located with the search can be forwarded or replied to.
Everywhere also features an alternate streamlined interface that lets users access files, e-mail, and other basic information -- including Outlook calendars -- without resorting to a full-fledged remote control session. It's ideal for low-speed dial-up connections, said Laplink.
Single PC licenses start at $8.95 per month and top out at $94.90 per year. A three-PC license runs $9.95 to $19.95 per month.
A 15-day free trial can be downloaded from the Laplink site.
