Wireless provider Nextel Communications says the main reason it wants to swap some spectrum with Uncle Sam is to clear channels for use by police and fire departments. It's only a coincidence that the deal would increase the value of Nextel's frequency holdings and make it a more-attractive acquisition target, a spokeswoman says.

Nextel wants to exchange 16 MHz of spectrum it holds in the 700-, 800-, and 900-MHz bands for 16 MHz of spectrum in the upper 800-MHz band and the coveted 2.1-GHz band that's reserved for satellite and 3G wireless services.
