Motorola Selling Phones In Vending Machines

The 25-item selection will include carrier-ready Razr handsets, Bluetooth-enabled headsets, cordless phones, and car chargers.
MANHASSET, N.Y. — Motorola Inc. has begun selling selected mobile phone and accessories through what the company terms as "robotic retail stores", in an alternative to traditional retail channels.

Motorola (Schaumburg, Ill.) will equip the retail locations, operated by Zoom Systems, with automated vending machines housing over 25 Motorola mobile phone products. The selection will include carrier-ready Razr handsets, Bluetooth-enabled headsets, cordless phones, and car chargers, according to the company.

The company will initially deploy 20 of these stories in high-traffic retail locations throughout the U.S. Vending systems now exist in San Francisco International Airport and a Macy's in downtown Chicago.

"Continuing our effort to reinvent mobile retail culture and transform the consumer experience, this on-demand retail solution is an interesting approach to the many extensions of our retail strategy," said Jason Few, corporate vice president, Global Retail, Motorola, in a statement.
