The MotoFone, along with a half dozen other cellular phones, was unveiled this week at the Schaumburg, Ill., company's annual financial analysts day. The new phone is 9 millimeters thick and includes a flat keypad.
Another new phone introduced at the meeting was the MotoKrzr, which is based on the design of the popular MotoRazr. The latter phone has been a key driver behind Motorola's success in the market. In addition, Motorola unveiled the MotoRizr, its first handset with a sliding cover.
Also at the event, Motorola said it plans to acquire Broadbus Technologies Inc., which provides technology for television on demand. Motorola plans to use Broadbus to extend its video delivery platform with new content management and distribution capabilities, improving the platform for mobile video, video on-demand, time-shifted TV, network-based digital video recording, on-demand ad insertion and switched digital video. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Motorola is the second largest maker of handsets, accounting for 22 percent of all shipments in the second quarter, according to analyst firms. Nokia Corp. is No. 1 with 33 percent.
