Multifaceted RFID Readers

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory will use technology from Spectrum Signal Processing to build readers that can detect and process signals from both active and passive RFID tags.
Oak Ridge National Laboratory will use Spectrum Signal Processing Inc.'s flexComm SDR-3000 platform to build radio-frequency identification readers that can detect and process signals from both active and passive RFID tags. The lab, a science and technology center managed for the Department of Energy by UT-Battelle LLC, is developing its first multistandard reader based on demand from contracts with the Energy and Defense departments.

The prototype readers are expected to be complete "in the near future." The Spectrun Signal Processing platform was chosen because it's flexible enough to support the diverse range of communication applications used by both departments. Software-defined radio technology, made possible by digitization of analog RF, will let the reader change frequencies to read active or passive tags.

The reader also will become available for commercial use, says Paul Ewing, leader of the RF and microwave systems group at the Oak Ridge National Lab. "The Oak Ridge National Laboratory won't take the readers to market," he says. "We will develop the technology and license it to a private company. It's done all the time." A company in the commercial sector would license the technology and brand the finished product under its name.

Scientists and engineers at the lab conduct basic and applied research to develop applications and devices for energy, restore and protect the environment, and contribute technology to national security. In the past, the Energy Department has used RFID to track vehicles and nuclear materials, although the reason for the deployment this time around isn't clear. The Defense Department has been instrumental in demonstrating RFID tags and readers for tracking and tracing goods through its supply chain and into combat, and expects its suppliers to affix RFID tags on cases and pallets by Jan. 1. The Defense Department is expected to publish its RFID guidelines for suppliers by the end of this month.
