Compaq last week introduced standards-based Fibre Channel and IP technology that can be used to replicate data over long distances. The technology is designed for companies that are already using Fibre Channel for storage area networks in metropolitan areas and want to extend those capabilities over wide areas without a loss in performance. Customers can use this technology to keep information available remotely when a natural disaster strikes, Illuminata analyst John Webster says. He adds that companies need to ask whether it's important to have "data available within 5 seconds of a disaster."
