SanDisk Shows Off SD Card With USB Connector

SanDisk introduces a SD flash memory card with a built-in USB 2.0 connector so users can plug the card directly into a computer without having to resort to a middleman-esque card reader.
SanDisk on Friday introduced a SD flash memory card with a built-in USB 2.0 connector so users can plug the card directly into a computer without having to resort to a middleman-esque card reader.

The card, which is hinged in the center, bends to reveal a USB connector. The device also includes an LED that blinks when data is transferred, indicating when the card is operating as a USB flash drive.

"A device that can successfully be used in both sockets without external caps or adapters will allow effortless transfer of data, music, photos, and videos between PCs and portable consumer electronics devices," said Allen Leibovitch, an IDC analyst in a statement. "It could also extend SD's dominance as the form factor of choice for portable multimedia storage."

SD (Secure Digital) memory cards are used in digital cameras, PDAs, and some mobile phones.

SanDisk expects to release SD-USB combo cards in the first quarter of 2005 in sizes as large as 1 gigabyte, the company said.
