The installation is powered by a 2,048-processor SGI Altix supercomputer, with each node consisting of a 1.6 GHz Intel Itanium 2 processor. The supercomputer also features a 4 gigabit storage infrastructure configured from the SilkWorm 4100 family of 4-Gbit/sec midrange SAN switches, made by Brocade Communications Systems.
"These latest storage upgrades from SGI and Brocade provide a direct performance benefit to our user community of Defense Department researchers and engineers who have big data requirements and require a robust storage area network capable of handling a massive amount of data," Steve Wourms, director of the ARC site at Wright-Patterson, said in a statement.
The ASC has named the installation "Eagle" and notes it will be used to advance design concepts, increase high fidelity simulations, and improve and speed modification programs. SGI said the ASC facility acquired the supercomputer to maintain its superiority in weapons systems design.
SGI noted that the system expands ASC MSRC's capability to more than 4,100 processors, which are distributed across five separate shared systems. SGI and Brocade said the storage array is the first 4-Gbits RAID array on the market. The storage configuration combines 4 Gbit/sec Fibre Channel architecture with increased host connectivity.
