Shuttle Launch Sets Record For Online Viewers

More than 335,000 people watched the Shuttle Discovery launch online through official NASA websites, topping all other space missions, Yahoo says.
More than 335,000 people watched the Shuttle Discovery launch online through official NASA websites, topping all other space missions, Yahoo said Wednesday.

The live stream of Tuesday's launch was first NASA provided through an online media partnership, the Sunnyvale, Calif., web portal said. Under the agreement, Yahoo provided a co-branded Windows Media Player that's streaming the mission's official online video on both NASA and Yahoo websites.

Both sites are also providing full coverage of the 12-day mission.

The latest live stream tripled the online audience NASA has garnered for past events, Yahoo said. For example, NASA had 118,000 webcast streams for the Deep Impact mission on July 4, and fewer than 50,000 for the Mars Exploration Rover landing in January 2004.
