Wayport Passes 10,000 Hotspot Milestone

Vendor also claims the number of connections at its hotspots nearly doubled in the last year.
Wi-Fi hotspot provider Wayport said Monday it now has passed the 10,000 Wi-Fi hotspot milestone and that it has had more than 12 million customer connections so far.

The vendor said that the figure not only includes hotspots it developed itself, such as the 5100 hotspots in McDonald's restaurants, but also more than 4000 hotspots that it has provided through managed service agreements with other vendors. A total of 7000 of the 10,000 hotspots have been deployed in the last year, the company said.

Besides saying that it has had more than 12 million customer connections, Wayport also said that the number of connections increased by 94 percent in the year ending on June 30 compared to the previous year.

"Our tremendous growth of the number of locations and customer connections throughout our network proves that Wi-Fi has gone mainstream and that our venues and customers we serve are seeing tremendous productivity gains and value from Wayport service," Dave Vucina, CEO of Wayport, said in a statement.
