HP's latest printers for small and midsize businesses include the company's "plug and print" technology that enables printing within 2 minutes of connecting with no install CD.HP rolled out several new printers today that offer what the company claims is an industry-first: "plug and print" technology. The technology allows users to begin printing within 2 minutes of connecting a printer to a computer with a USB cable and requires no installation CD. The emphasis on simplicity is no accident. HP sees simplicity and low cost as key to success in the SMB printer segment.
According to HP product marketing manager, Susy Brooks, HP is focused on "making our products drop-dead simple. [SMBs] Don't need the bells and whistles. They just need it to work so they can focus on growing their business."
According to estimates Brooks cited, the SMB printer market will reach $81 billion my 2013. That explains why HP (not to mention Dell) are tossing around buzzwords such as "purpose-built" in a quest to be the vendor of choice when it comes to meeting the printing needs of smaller organizations.
The specific printer models that HP introduced today include:
The monochrome HP LaserJet Pro 1100 series, touted as among the most energy-efficient laser printers on the planet. The LaserJet Pro P1102W ($149) is targeted to home and desktop office users offering wireless printing at up to 19 ppm with a monthly duty cycle of 250-1,500 pages.
The monochrome LaserJet Pro 1606DN ($229) prints up to 26 ppm with included Ethernet networking, automatic duplex printing, and a monthly duty cycle of 250-2,000 pages.
The multifunction LaserJet Pro M1212NF ($199) prints up to 19 ppm in black and white and combines copying, scanning, and faxing in one Ethernet ready unit that has a monthly duty cycle up to 8,000 pages.
All the new HP printers, feature the company's Auto-On technology that senses activity to power up and power down printers as usage demands. HP claims this can result in up to 72% energy savings over earlier models.
In addition to the new printers, HP also introduced a mobile scanner designed for road warriors and workers in the field. The ScanJet Professional 1000 ($249) scans up to 600 dpi, includes one-button PDF generation, and uses USB power rather than a dedicated power cord.
