Juniper CEO: Point Products Don't Provide What Businesses Need
Businesses need to pick strategic partners that provide multifunctional products and platforms in order to solve complex problems, Scott Kriens says.
Businesses seeking to improve the responsiveness and performance of their IT systems need to pick a strategic vendor that can do more than offer point products to solve specific problems. Business-technology managers should look for vendors that can offer multifunctional products or platforms that can address a variety of business and technology problems, said Scott Kriens, chairman and CEO of Juniper Networks Inc., during a wide-ranging keynote speech at the Interop 2005 conference Wednesday morning.
Kriens reviewed a number of issues facing business-technology managers as their IT infrastructures evolve. For instance, he noted that there's a growing problem in application performance that has resulted from the consolidation of data centers. While data centers are merging, users are multiplying, so making sure that applications operate smoothly is becoming more challenging than ever for companies, he said.
Another problem facing companies today is network security. Regulatory controls such as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act are putting pressure on companies to prove that their systems are secure, but "users are proliferating and the volume and the sophistication of attacks are increasing," Kriens said.
The answer can't come from a single vendor or product because the problems are multidimensional. Businesses need to develop strategies that target those problems internally and focus on executing them with the help of a strategic vendor that offers products that are multifunctional, Kriens said.
Juniper is trying to establish itself as such a vendor through partnerships and acquisitions. Juniper last month acquired Peribit Networks Inc., a provider of wide area network-optimization technology, and Redline Networks Inc., a developer of application front-end technology that's typically deployed within the boundaries of corporate data centers and enables users to control and customize any Web-based environment. The acquisitions are part of an effort to consolidate market segments into a more comprehensive platform, the company says.
Juniper also is working with partners to create an "enterprise Infranet" that consists of policies, delivery control, use control, and threat control. Juniper has already rolled out Enterprise Infranet Controller, Infranet Agent, and Infranet Enforcer, a suite of products that support this framework, and said at Interop that it will provide these controls for Avaya Inc.'s IP-telephony systems.
Kriens concluded: "We are very much focused on industry collaboration, which means creating win-win partnerships and open standards."
